D.T.E. Whats inside a computer

This term we have been  doing a topic that includes ripping apart a computer. Here is a info graphic that will tell you the main parts of a computer:

Here are some pictures that we took while ripping apart our computers:

It took us about 2 lessons to complete this task.
We were supposed to put the computer back?! - but i dont think it will happen
It did take a lot of time, there were a lot of screws. At the end it was taking to long so we just ripped it apart. There is no way we are going to put this computer together again.
One of my team mates had a really good time pulling the computer apart and smashing the screen.
I was away for most of the time so i missed out on pulling stuff apart on the second day. But from the first day i learnt that you need to have patients and it is good to keep things in a pile not all over the table.
if i had more time i would have liked to have a look at all the main parts of the computer individually and where they are located, on the computer, inside the computer, or on the mother board etc.
Next time i would like to try a different type of computer etc. And i would also like to have more variety of screw drivers and i would have like a little more time to do this task.
This task was over all very fun and i learn a lot from it. I would do it again :)

Science - Ocean acidification and acid rain

Acids And bases

What is an acid?
A substance that can eat away at something eg, metal, wood, skin. There are two types of acids, organic acid which includes lemons, vinegar etc. And mineral acid which include chemicals and are usually a lot stronger than organic acids.

Ocean acidification link:

Ocean Acidification
Name: Zoe

Questions

  • How have humans contributed to ocean acidification?

Carbon Dioxide (is being produced by humans factors and is being sucked up by the ocean) and pollution (litter, great pasific garbage patch)
  • How is ocean acidification affecting organisms in the ocean?
Warmer water and toxic algae are a potent mix, and together they will create larger and more frequent dead zones throughout the ocean. These are areas where decomposing algae cause bacteria to eat up all the oxygen in the water, rendering it uninhabitable for sea life
  • Why is the rate of ocean acidification alarming to scientists?
Sea life is in is being affected and may go extinct if not fixed. Less oxygen for sea life
  • What can you do to reduce the effects of ocean acidification?
Watch what you pour down the drain and use eco-friendly products that break down. Remember often what goes down the drain ends up in rivers and lakes, which all filter into our oceans. Reduce your plastic addiction.
  • Find a suitable line graph from a source NOT listed here, that shows ocean acidification over time. You MUST be able to understand it yourself! The graph should be simple enough for everyone in the class to understand.  Copy and paste it here.

  • You can do this task in a group of 2 or 3 if you like. Everyone must have it written down though.
How could we do an experiment in our classroom that investigates the effects of acidity on shellfish and coral? (Hint: both are made from calcium carbonate, what could we use to model/instead of their shells? Google!)
Sponge , shells, Sand , mussels ,vinegar , egg shell, lemon ,. OR http://web.uri.edu/smile/files/Shells-in-Acid-LAB1.pdf

Design a small experiment that would give use more evidence for the dangers of ocean acidification on these animals. What would you need, what would you do, and what would any results tell you? (I will pick a few of the best explained experiments for us to actually do in class)  You can include images if you like.

Blow into a test tube and see how acidic carbon dioxide is
Put smoke or other fumes into the water and see how acidic it is by putting special luquid that can tell us if it is a base or acid.

OVERARCHING QUESTION
pH and ocean acidification

The world’s oceans currently absorb as much as one-third of all CO2 emissions in our atmosphere. This causes the pH to decrease, resulting in the ocean becoming more acidic. This could have significant impacts on life in the sea. It is difficult to predict the overall impact on the marine ecosystem, but many scientists fear that ocean acidification has the potential to decrease marine biodiversity on a very large scale.

Is there anything we can do to reduce ocean acidification?

In order to cope and be resilient as best we can with climate change humans need to be able to adapt our lifestyles, thinking and perhaps values. We need to think about and act on ways to mitigate (reduce, lessen, alleviate) consequences of global warming, such as climate change, and adapt to current and predicted effects. Central government, local government, business and all citizens (households) are stakeholders in making these changes.

As a group discuss your evidence and brainstorm ways we could adapt and mitigate against the effects of global warming and climate change.
For each stakeholder group think about what action could be taken to mitigate and adapt to the expected effects.

Stakeholder
Ways they could mitigate ocean acidification
Central government
Could change the way we use energy, instead of using cole/fossil fuels use wind power or solar power. - By banding types of cars that are using to much petrol, and adding more busses for transport around town etc.
Local government
Have a day of when everyone from town cleans up a part of town, beach etc.
Business
Have a day where people can go to schools and take kids to help tidy the town, a park etc. You could also teach the kids why we are doing it and how its affecting the environment, by showing them/ taking them on walks in a park and show how it has changed over the years.
Citizens/households
Use fabric bags instead of getting plastic bags every time we go to the supermarket.
Ior by trying to go trash free.

Today we did an experiment for acidification and how shell fish were being effected.
first: collect all the data you will need (weight/volume etc.)
we got three beacers and filled them both with 100 mls of water.
we put a table spoon of salt in one of the beacers, representing sea water.
in the second beacer we put an extra table spoon of water.
In the last beacer we put a table spoon of vingur representing acidificaton waters.
After leaving the shells in the beacers with the water etc for a couple of days, we then wrote down our data, that we needed (the weight and volume of the shell). Then we decided the smash them and see how strong/ weak they were.
We found out that the shell in the vinugur was whiter and alot weaker than the other two.

Acid Rain

How is acid rain formed and what causes acid rain?
Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These can include, fossil fuels, volcanic eruption etc. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, (for example, rain and dust)and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain. - Link Here

What this effects?
acid rain can effect the ocean (ocean acidification), lakes, river, forests,  the dirt and soil, and some buildings and statues etc.

Where is acid rain effected?
Sulphur dioxide can cause acid rain which seriously affects ecosystems. Acid rainis a major problem in the northern hemisphere where trees and whole forests have been affectedAcid rain does not occur in New Zealand, because they dont burn many or hardly any fossil fuels. However, sulphur dioxide deposition can affect vegetation around industrial discharges and in cities.link here

Whats in common?
Ocean acidifcation and acid rain both have something in common, the main thing that is making things acidic is mainly caused because factory's are burning fossil fuels releasing acidic molecules into the air which gets into the rain, ocean and earth/soil.

Social Studies Careers Essay

This essay will explain the key criteria, skills and qualities that are needed in order to be a Photographer. It will also explain what it is like in the day to day life for a photographer.

In order to become a Photographer there are many key criteria that are needed for this job. To become a photographer you will need A Bachelor of Arts in Photography which will provide more options for a career and for advancement, they are;  art, business, marketing and other courses to round out one's education. You will all so need  A polished portfolio, which is often a requirement for graduation, and  is another benefit of a bachelor's degree program. These are the key criteria that are needed to become a photographer.

To become a photographer there are some important Skills are qualities that are needed for this job/career. To be a photographer the skills you should have are to be artistic and creative, have the technical ability with a wide range of photographic equipment and technology, have a keen eye for detail, good communication and people skills, and have good time management and  skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines. These are really good skills and qualities that show that you are a good experienced photographer, and more likely to get a job in  this career.

The day to day life of photographer requires a variety of activities. Examples will be in this paragraph. Depending on what you're doing, you could be outside in the rain for days on end, waiting for a perfect moment to take place and to capture a piece of artwork there has never been before, and make it a new trend. Or for a day or two for hundreds of people at a huge event, too many pictures to count and full long working hours, editing all night, and has to be on time/ finish on time. Or just for fun, getting dirty and experimenting. Being creative to create a story in the photo. An average photographer will work around 40 hours weekly. A wedding photographer will work around 60 - 65 hours for a couple of days/ weeks of work. Nature geographic photographer (freelancer) can spend a whole day taking photos (24 hours), and some taking none. They would work for about 10-14 days, about 10 -12 times a year. Things you need to know in a daily photographers life: You will need to know how to use a camera on manual, How to create artificial light with equipment, Know how to use photo-shop and filters etc, Develop and print exposed film, Measure light levels, distances, devices and formulas, Load and unload film, Know how to use camera equipment, Know how to Share photographs(in or out of the community). These are the main things you will do in the life of a photographer, they have a lot of variety depending on what job you are doing in this career.

In conclusion  we learnt that to get into this job/career  you have to have a arts degree, and being creative, on time, and having good communication skills, are all good qualities that are good to have as a photographer. What a photographer does in its job, how many hours a photographer can work up to in a week etc, and in general what is is like to be a photographer for a day.

The Outsiders - Essay

The Outsiders is an amazing inspirational deep and meaningful story about a boy named Ponyboy and two gangs. There are alot of relation ships throught the film that are important.

Loyalty  is used a lot throughout the novel The Outsiders when Johnny runs away after stabbing Bob through his actions. For example when Johnny killed Bob because they are drowning Ponyboy “i had to… otherwise they were gonna kill you …..” not thinking of the consequences but looking after his friend. And when they both went to the church Ponyboy stayed with Johnny even though he didn't need to because he didn't kill bob. This shows us that Ponyboy and Johnny are the best of friends as they both give up something, Ponyboy - his hair, and Johnny - killed someone. And that they have each others backs. S.E Hinton did this to show us that even though people in gangs don't look like nice people have a good side to them and still care for people just as much. This reminds me of when in the book The Hunger Games that they will stick together no matter what and will give up something to save their lives.

Not only is loyalty in Johnny and Ponyboys actions, but is important in relationships within the outsiders but with Johnny's identity between him and Bob. At the start of the novel it says that Johnny was jumped by their rival gang the socs. He was on his way home, walking through the park, when he saw a shiny new blue mustang. In side of that mustang were a few socs that beat Johnny up. Johnny mainly remembered a boy called with rings on his right hand that beat him up scaring his face. Now Johnny get a bit skippy whenever he sees that mustang. This now makes me understand that whenever he is scared that he will protect himself for that person , and so will his friends. Making him hate Bob from his past actions And that this is what has shaped him as he is now. The purpose of this is to show that people's past and actions can change their life and what they think of people/things, if it was themselves or other people who had done it. This aspect can be compared to On The Sidewalk Bleeding, because at the end of the short story he says that he is Andy and not a gang member and starts hating himself for it making him scared of himself; making him who he is now.

Ponyboy and Cheire had a caring relationship throughout the novel talking about sunsets. For example when Ponyboy and Cherie go to get popcorn and a coke they talk to each other. Later on when they start to leave the drive in movie Cherie starts to talk about his brothers and comparing him the them “what about darry…. Is he as charming as you……” Telling us that she cares about Ponyboy as does Ponyboy about here throughout the film when the meet. This makes the audience think that there could be romance in this movie as well as hope as something to look forward to at the end of the film and making us feel anxious and slightly romantic as they talk to one another while talking under the sunset. This was done to show that people in gangs have a good heart and still care about people. And just because of their title doesn't mean that they don't feel anything or have emotions. This reminds me of when in the short story On The Sidewalk Bleeding at the end where Andy's girlfriend Laura finds andy dead showing that she cared with her emotions and actions by getting the police officer. By that she showed and that she cared by way the police officer called him a royal and not by his name.

The relationships between the Curtis brothers are very important to this story by sharing their responsibilities between them and understanding how they feel about that. We see this when at the end of the film when Ponyboy and Darry are in an argument about school, Sodapop runs out the door feeling stressed by their actions and responsibilities/understanding between them. Because darry is being to hard on Ponyboy, and Ponyboy not understanding the responsibilities that darry has and what he has given up for him to be at the school. This makes me understand that darry has the biggest responsibility as he has to look after his brothers as well as going to work to have enough money to buy food for them etc, so he doesn't lose them to a boys home after losing their parents. And that Ponyboy  now knows why he is being picked on his brother; because he loves him and wants him to be successful at school unlike him and Sodapop. The author did this to show us that responsibilities in a family with no parents can be hard but they still love each other just as much. This can be compared to when in the film the wizard of oz in the start of the film they all have their responsibilities and understand and help each other. And at the end of the film they looked after her and made her a responsibility as well as toto the dog at the start of the film.

The Outsiders is an amazing Book full of adventure, messy relationships, loyalty and love and support. This book is good to read for all ages to enjoy.
