Project Base Learning

H.O.P.E.

At Hornby high school for the last 4 weeks of school (term 4), we have been asked to do something for the community that will have a positive impact. Our group; Fleur, Brooke and myself, had decided we were going to do something for the homeless. I would like to help the homeless because they are human and they deserve the same as any human being does. When our group was formed we had to come up with a name; H.O.P.E. - "Help Other People Enjoy" life.

Since we didn't know much about the topic we are going to be learning about for the next couple of weeks we did some research. Here are some links that has helped us so far:

When we had done enough research we had to answer the following questions:

Who was affected? - Many people of all ages had lost their homes to the Christchurch earthquakes and became homeless. And another reason is that people have lost their jobs and don't have money to pay for rent.

What are the issues? - The homeless are struggling to find shelter, currently, they are using cardboard boxes and sleeping on the streets. Sitting on the streets all day holding sign hoping for money for their dinner.

When did it start and how has it progressed? - people lose their jobs and not being able to pay rent for their house making them homeless. Christchurch earthquake in 2012 making thousands homeless because their houses were destroyed making a huge impact on the homeless.

Where is this happening? - Most homeless people are found in cities where there are more chances of getting money. Some homeless can be supported by communities and stay around there.
Homeless can also be found in most big cities.

Why is this happening? - There are fewer jobs and people are getting fired and can no longer pay for a house because the rent of their house is really expensive or because their house was taken from them from natural disasters or because landlords selling land etc.

How are we going to solve this or make a positive impact on homeless people?

After discussing this our group came up with an idea to make a little gift bag for the homeless, that may or may not be Christmas themed, that will have food, water and other small affordable things that can make a small impact for them. We feel this was a good idea because not many homeless people have a real Christmas and don't get as much as others do during Christmas that including food and presents.

I thought that this was a good idea because everyone deserves to be happy on Christmas and should be surrounded by family and friends.

First action plan:

We have completed the fist check point. We had to email a couple of companies only three of them replying. Kamart said that we have to weight them a letter. But we don't have time to do that. Next spotlight. We may have to go see them in the weekend to go and  collect the bags. Lastly we rang gorgeous foods and they are are possible able to donate some stuff to us as well.

I had also talked to my uncle to see if he was able to give is some spare clothes.

Thinking ahead of time we are going to go out of school in PBL on the Friday to go give our donations to city mission. So for that we also need to fill in a permission slip to be able to go out of school. This will most likely be at the end of the day.

Steps needed to achieve the goal.
What will help us achieve this goal?(Enablers)
Possible barriers and how they could be overcome.
Who is responsible for this step?
Date this step will be achieved by.
Contact city mission via email and ask if we would be able to be a volunteer for the day and/or sponsor us for plan B.
If we are able to help then we will ask mr rodgers. (ask him first)
We will also try and contact queen Anne watties and lincraft
Emailing them both during school hours

People are at school that we need to talk to and c/ mission email us

Have permission for going out of school
City mission saying no to both things - we could overcome this by doing fundraising by ourselves.

Not allowed to go out of school- we can overcome this by doing it in our own time, eg weekend.

Persuasive writing essay

 Zoe

Better food, better students, better grades. The school’s tuck shop should have more healthy food options. This will give the tuck shop more customers, students will have more energy, and it's more practical to prepare.
If the school's inferior tuck shop were to add more healthy options to the menu more students will come and buy the food. For example, more people would rather eat healthy than a damaging, unhealthy school lunch. Foodinsite.org says that 6 to 10 students put effort into eating healthy, at home and at school. The school's tuck shop only has so much good quality food. If we were to add healthy foods to the menu it won't only give the tuck shop more variety of food but will attract more minority of people.

If the tuck shop added healthier options it won't only add customers, but it will give students energy for classes. For example, eating healthy can make you sleep better, therefore making you less tired and ready for class with enthusiastic energy. Due.com says that eating healthy will make your energy last longer and will prevent sick days. This will lead to more work being done in class, students focusing on their work and not disturbing others during classes. More energy and less sick days, who doesn't want that?

Not only will more customers come and students will have more energy, but if the tuck shop would have more healthy food options it would be a lot faster to prepare exceptional, healthy food. For example, when you look up healthy meals it comes with many quick and easy ready meal ideas. If you go to jamieoliver.com he has quick healthy meals that you can use. Whether it be fish or a fresh garden salad. QSR says that 61% of people say that they like a variety of healthy food at cafes and fast food restaurants. If there were to be more healthy options on the menu you will have a variety of food; this will give students healthy and unhealthy food choices.

There are many positives to having healthy food choices at our tuckshop but there is one main negative about it; the cost of the ingredients. Ingredients like carrots, apples, berries, bananas, whole grain bread and smoothies can be very high-priced, especially when not in season or out of stock. Although there are some pricey negatives to it, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives about making out tuck shop healthier.

The school's tuck shop should have more healthy food options. This will give the tuck shop more customers, students more energy, and it's more practical and quicker to make. A better way of eating is a better way of living.
